Tonia Eckfeld is Associate Professor and Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne in its Asia Institute and School of Culture and Communications. She has been a Fellow at Harvard University and the University of Chicago where she was a professor in Art and Architectural History and Chinese Studies. In China, she works with the Shaanxi Archaeological Research Institute.
Associate Professor Eckfeld specializes in the visual and material culture of China, India and Japan, with particular interest in the trans-cultural migration of Buddhist imagery, and funerary art and architecture. She is author of the landmark book, Imperial Tombs in Tang China, 618 – 907, The Politics of Paradise (RoutledgeCurzon, 2005) and numerous other scholarly works, including the recent volume chapter ‘Reinventing the Past, Inventing a Dynasty: Inspiration, Monuments of the Past and Tang Dynastic Topography’ (2010). Tonia is an academic adviser to National Geographic, working on and appearing in the documentary film Ancient Secrets: China’s Lost Pyramids now released worldwide. She is currently working on further documentary films on Chinese art and archaeology and a program is being produced by Shaanxi TV about Tonia and her work in China.
