Laura Sowden is a Macquarie PhD Candidate, researching Political Women in early Imperial China, specifically the Han Dynasty. Her PhD research focuses on how women engaged in politics, the socio-political forces and gender norms which curtailed or enabled their political activities and the social views of female political involvement represented in several Han Dynasty texts. The core texts for her research are Liu Xiang’s Lienuzhüan, Ban Gu’s Han Shu, Sima Qian’s Shi Ji and the writings of Ban Zhao. Laura’s research is grounded in the literary texts of the Han Dynasty while also engaging with modern feminist theory.
